Creating Healthy Soil – the Foundation of Organic Gardening An Introductory Class
Healthy Soils – Healthy Plants – Healthy People

It is easy to take “dirt” for granted.  It is literally under our feet.  Yet soil is an incredibly vibrant and essential component for the growth of plants, and for the health and well-being of humans and animals.  A single teaspoon of healthy garden soil can contain as many as 600 million micro-organisms, and as many as 15,000 species of bacteria.  That’s bio-diversity!  As wise gardeners, we are literally caring for a vast “micro-herd” of critters!

Developing an appreciation of soil can lead to more vigorous plant growth in the garden, and a more satisfying gardening experience for the gardener.  Join Fergie’s Gardeners as we invite Shane LaBrake, Agricultural Consultant and Teacher-Trainer, for an informative and lively lecture and discussion on soil.  This class-style lecture will help demystify the soil ecosystem, and offer sound tips on how to improve your garden soil and better steward this important resource.

As former manager of the Accokeek Foundation Ecosystem Farm for a dozen years, and well-respected gardener in the region, Shane has a deep understanding of local soils, and a strong track record of creating beautiful gardens and bountiful harvests from challenging soil conditions.
