American Legion Bridge Area Cleanup

Do you want to come to a cleanup and actually do some work and not just be hunting for random cigarette butts? Come join us at this site, on the Maryland side of the Potomac River’s two Beltway overpasses. Because of the thousands of vehicles that cross the Potomac each day, this is the site that keeps on giving for those of you who want to really make a difference. Over the years we’ve collected camper shells, plastic tool sheds, fiberglass batts, ladders, etc. You name it — whatever gets blown or thrown from a passing vehicle will be found on these slopes, waiting for you to pick it up. I’ve been told by those entities (NPS and Canal Association) that help with trash removal that volunteers at this site have consistently collected the most trash in at least a 20-mile stretch of towpath/river. You’ll definitely feel that you’ve made a difference when we finish up here. We will meet at the parking lot at Lock 10, then walk approximately 1/2 mile upstream to the Bridge. Bags and refreshments will be provided, but please bring your own heavy-duty gloves (forget plastic disposable gloves unless you’re planning on slicing meat onsite). Wear closed-toe shoes. This is a beautiful location, especially in the spring when the bluebells come out. We’ll be working from the towpath down to the river…and you’ll have the opportunity to see up close what you’ve probably driven over a zillion times. Soak in the sights, because some of them will be gone soon with the planned Beltway expansion. Be prepared for the noise. SSL hours will be awarded for middle and high school students who participate (bring forms with you). For parents of children in middle or high school — if your kid can’t get to and from the site independently, you must commit to volunteer with them.
