From Classrooms to Creeks: Environmental Literacy Training for Teachers

August 5 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Free

Embark on an outdoor science adventure with MWEEs!

Are you ready to implement a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE)? Learn how to help your students become better environmental stewards and meet state curriculum standards and the goals established in the Chesapeake Bay Agreement that require all students to complete a MWEE during elementary, middle, and high school.

Jump into nature at beautiful Hard Bargain Farm, our 330-acre property along the Potomac River. We will enjoy birding on the marsh and do a cleanup on the Potomac River. Learn about the many ways that you can help your students complete a MWEE. Focus on an environmental issue that students connect to, research the issue and ways that people are working to solve this problem, take an outdoor excursion to enhance their connection to nature, and gain information about environmental concerns. Finally, help them to take action! Action projects help students understand that they can make a difference!

The Alice Ferguson Foundation can be your home for Environmental Education! We can assist your school and teachers through professional development, day and overnight field trips, in-school programs to green your school, and implementation of your MWEE! The Foundation is here to help your school create leaders for the future in environmental issues and help your students understand and appreciate their connection to nature.

Training Prerequisite: Complete MWEE 101 so you have the basics before you arrive. This will help you understand the main concepts of a MWEE —issue definition, outdoor field experiences, synthesis and conclusion, and environmental action projects— all completed within the framework of teacher facilitation, learning integration, sustained experiences, and local context.
