Fermentation Workshop: The Art of Fermentation

Fermentation is a metabolic process that produces chemical changes in organic substrates through the action of enzymes. … The science of fermentation is known as zymology.

This hands-on workshop will introduce beginners (children are welcome if accompanied by an adult) to the simple art of fermenting at home. We will discuss several of the “Special K” trendy ferments….Kombucha, Kraut, Kimchi, Kefir, Kvass, and others. Participants will have an opportunity to taste several fermented foods, learn about the process, equipment, take home some recipes, and make a jar of healthy delicious lacto-fermented veggies.

Fermentation is also an amazing natural tool that can help make food more digestible, nutritious and flavorful.  There has been a resurgence of interest and popularity in health benefits of fermented foods.  This is not a “new” idea but the ancient skill that human cultures all over the world use to preserve food without refrigeration in order to have safe sustainable nutrition for their families.
