Common Name:  Garlic Mustard
Scientific Name:  Alliaria petiolata
Plant Origin:  Europe

  • Encroaches upon the limited habitat of many endangered native plant species, competing for resources normally available for native plants.

  • Reduces and eliminates host plants for native insects and other wildlife.

  • Can be toxic to insects seeking the native host plant, such as the West Virginia White butterfly that sometimes mistakes garlic mustard for toothwort.

  • Quickly takes over native ground cover species because it produces large numbers of seeds and has no natural predators.
