Meet Brenda, a passionate environmental educator who has dedicated a remarkable 28 years to the Alice Ferguson Foundation, sharing her love of the outdoors with children across the region. Get to know Brenda in our staff spotlight series.
How long have you woked at the Alice Ferguson Foundation?
A total of 28 years, recently returning after a brief hiatus six months ago.
In that time I have been an educator, volunteer coordinator, assistant event coordinator, and charter member of Fergie’s Gardeners.
What is your position at the Foundation?
Part-time Environmental Educator
I also spend time tending to the formal garden at the Farmhouse.
What did you do before coming to AFF?
I was a stay-at-home mom.
Why do you love working at AFF?
I love introducing children to the outdoors. A few of my favorite memories include…
A huge oak had fallen on the trail and all we could see was the big root ball. Some kids thought it was a climbing wall so I directed to walk around and when one student saw it he said “This giant tree came from one acorn?”
A few kindergartners once answered… “How do we know it is spring?” Because we just had spring break. Where does butter come from? “Butterflies. ” There’s never a dull moment!
My most memorable student experience was really farm related. He was a fifth grader that was quiet and made fun of by the others. When he was in the barnyard our goat, Cowboy, really took a liking to him. He came up to me and said Miss Brenda “The goat really likes me!” I believe this is the first time this student felt accepted. It made my day. Cowboy was an amazing goat!
What is your favorite spot on the property?
I love the barn because it is one of the quietest places on the farm. It is a great place for reflection and the kids are always amazed when the go upstairs to the hay loft. We used to let them throw hay down to the animals when they were inside. There are many places I love but this is the once place I felt I really had the attention of the students and they quite impressed with the vastness of it.
What do you do in your free time away from AFF?
I take nature hikes throughout the area and spend time gardening, mostly flowers.
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
I enjoy taking care of my flower garden.
Why do you feel it’s so important to educate others about the environment?
Everything we do in our daily lives has an impact on the environment and we need to share and learn how we can leave a positive impact.
