Our environmental educators are our greatest asset in providing ‘ah-ha’ moments for students, where science and stewardship ‘come alive’ in the natural world through our hands-on programs. Get to know Pat in our employee spotlight series.
How long have you worked at AFF?
5+ years
What do you do at AFF?
I am an Environmental Educator.
What did you do before coming to AFF?
I was previously a stay at home mom and homeschooled my children. I’ve also worked as an Analytical Chemist.
Why do you love working at AFF?
It’s a bit of family tradition. I also just love being outdoors and want to share that passion with others.
Evelyn Biles, my mother in law, was a park ranger and AFF educator for 20 years (1970s – 1990s). Elmer Biles, my father in law, was the AFF Board President in the late 1960’s until 1980’s. Last but certainly not least, my husband John worked at the Foundation as a farm hand and sometimes tour guide from 1980 to 1985.
What is your favorite spot on the property?
For me, there’s two favorite spots – the view of the Potomac River from the top of the hill and along the swamp trail where the big tree cutout leads to the river (see below!). The rootballs of the downed tree are helpful when it’s time to teach students about the soil.
What do you do in your free time away from AFF?
Most anything outside – gardening, laying hen upkeep, archery, hiking, biking, etc.
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Watching the sunrise so I can see the wildlife and birds wake up and get active.
Why do you feel it’s so important to educate others about the environment?
If we don’t take care of it we will lose it. To love and nurture nature is a good thing for all.
