1941 – 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Frank Al Nicolai on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
What started as a single visit to the Hard Bargain Farm evolved into a long-term dedication to this organization for the Nicolais, who hold a deep respect for nature and admiration for the outdoors. Frank served on the Alice Ferguson Foundation Board of Directors from 2010-2016, and was a longtime member and generous supporter of the Foundation, along with his wife Shirley Nicolai (Board Emeriti 2011-2009).
In our 2022 interview with the Nicolais, Frank made sure to mention his love of the outdoors and “playing in the dirt.” He recalled witnessing a turtle nesting along the Foundation’s Wet Meadow, and how it was special to walk along the boardwalk and see animals that one wouldn’t usually encounter. The Nicolais believe strongly that experiencing the wonders of nature is a vital part of childrens’ development, and they graciously donated funds for a new classroom.
At the end of 2022, our newly constructed education pavilion was dedicated to the Nicolais to honor their many years of service and commitment to environmental education on the Potomac. For many years to come, the Shirley and Frank Nicolai Education Pavilion will help connect children to the natural beauty that Southern Maryland and the Potomac watershed have to offer.
In 1970, Frank helped found American Management Systems, Inc., an international company in the information technology industry. Retired since 2000, Frank enjoyed his time staying busy on his three acres and through his various professional commitments serving on nonprofit boards throughout the community. He also enjoyed traveling the world with Shirley and his family, as well as growing plants from seedlings. Frank kindly donated several plants for past Foundation plant sales.
Frank is survived by his wife Shirley (Snow) Nicolai, son Keith Nicolai (Sara), daughter Karen Baldwin (Ed), and five grandchildren.
We are so grateful for the impact Frank has left on the Alice Ferguson Foundation. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. View Frank’s obituary at https://kalasfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/Frank-Nicolai-10688
